Impressive as they got into full All Hallow's Eve spirit and played the set wearing clear lucite masks. Luis continues his amazing display of shirtwear with the Public Image Ltd tee. The new tracks availed really well, especially Alive, which is shaping out to be the best thing they have done to date, and was pleased to see 'Bones' also appear in the set. About the only thing we didn't get was 'Phantoms'.
I was wearing a Angry Birds pig mask...you can hear an amusing exchange befor the encore...the significance of this in light of what I was doing (TMQ/Swingin' Pig) not being lost on me. This recording has quite a bit of audience chatter, which I actually didn't mind at all...there were a group of kids that were very excited and wanted to crash around, but there's also a faction that likes to stand watching in silence, and not be slammed...and as you can imagine, they came to loggerheads.
Less talk, more bands. As Yan said it best after Canvey Island (at the 4:45 point) we're not conversational, we're here to play music. Our small group were right up front so we were in a great position to watch Brighton's finest, eschewing some of the scenery and antics of past performances, just playing their songs. Much of their set featured songs from their newest long-player Valhalla Dancehall, but there was a generous selection of past tracks as well.

They're from Bologna, Italy. No baloney. The singer sounded Canadian though. Loved the Fresh and Only shirt they keyboardist was wearing, that's a good touchstone for the kind of tunes these cats were playing.

Was very favorably impressed by these guys, it turns out that the father of one of the players on my boys' soccer team is close friends with singer Kevin, as they went to the same high school together. Looking forward to hearing their upcoming releases in full.

Here's my recent recording of the fabulous The Bird and the Bee. The Independent was packed on a Monday night to see this group, which features the daughter of Lowell George (from Little Feat) playing in a synth-pop duo. The 80s are back! Or was it electroclash finally becoming popular in LA? Crowd was pretty sedate considering the place it was filled, so I'm guessing the group was a bit more casual than the usual wild bunch that go to see shows here. :-)

Will also put up Obi Best soon (which I did)...they were a very pleasant surprise, and of course Alex and Wendy from that group also help out on backing vocals and random instruments.

Excellent band fronted by Tricia Kanne (vox/keyboard/guitar), with Matthew Swanson (keys/guitar), Nick Forte (bass), Ross Grant (guitars), and Lauren Grubb (drums). Lauren would later pound the skins for a bit for Topographies. "Like I Do" is as terrific now as it was then.
Normally, I don't redo my FLACs for such old shows, but I noticed that the original set had final track "The Way You Are" cut at the 3:22 point. I checked my original master WAVs and that was complete, so I went ahead and grafted the last minute or so from that onto the file, and while I was at it, I cleaned up some of the handling noise (decrackle filter plus channel cloning on the high frequencies), limited some of the loud clapping and whooping (mostly from yours truly), and applied automatic phase correction.
Essentially a project Michael Sempert and cohorts were doing for a few years. Quite sophisticated synth pop.
This recording isn't ideal, due to some handling noise that sounds like a strap being fastened/unfastened and a chattery crowd, and it sounds like the right mic wasn't aligned properly. A couple of unreleased tracks appear on this.
Bonus video, this is The Botticellis playing acoustically as featured on The Mercury Sessions, which was a very short-lived music feature set done by the SJ-based newspaper. They only did five total.
