In support of W.A.M. (Women's Audio Mission), which strives to promote the advancement of women in music production and the recording arts, visit their website at http://www.womensaudiomission.org/ to learn more.

Please also support the group by checking out some tunes at http://manesf.bandcamp.com

My Facebook page also has YouTube links to the Sirena Victima and Silver Shadows sets, who also performed.

There's simply a plethora amazing female-fronted groups plying their trade in SF/Oakland, as Women's Audio Mission proves, not to mention other bands like Cruel Summer, Quaaludes, and The World...none of whom sound alike...but this Silver Shadows video of one of my fave tunes of theirs (called "Faultlines") was a high point. Enjoy!

Thanks to the artists and those who recorded the show. I do not own the rights to this material. If any rights holder, or anyone associated with the band objects to it being here, away it goes."

Because creative writing is hard, I'll recycle what I had written earlier on.

"A fairly superlative effort from Camden's finest. Was surprised there wasn't more jostling down front. I guess we're all old and way too respectful. Lots of thunder clappers near me, so employed some limiting to tame the worst of it.

On the recording, there's a bit of right channel hum during quiet segments. No idea why, I've seen this happen before to me once or twice, otherwise it's not too distracting.

Emma seemed a bit upset over technical issues during the early part of her set, she had some words with her guitar techs after a couple of the songs...and think someone missed a cue near the end of 'For Love', leaving her dangling.

After Lit Up, Miki laid into the two guys in front of me who were videoing throughout...I've been guilty of this in the past but have severely curtailed this in situations (like this one) where your screen is all "lit up" (get it?) and it's indeed a huge distration to those behind you.

Worth quoting Miki in full:

"Okay, so I'm just going to say something because...I know people go on about this all the time, but if you're going to film, right, I personally (don't) give a shit but just check with the people behind you that it's not really fucking irritating them, you know, because it can kind of detract a little bit, you know. A little consideration...that's all I'm saying..."

The guys look like they got struck with lightning...though later on, they were at it again, but now standing *next* to each other, presumably with the approval of the people behind them this time.

As we were walking to the Warfield, my friends and I passed Phil next to the tour bus talking to a couple of fans right before the show."

A few photos from the show, taken with my iPhone 6S...

Will have more recordings in the pipeline, Andy Human and World anybody? More Cruel Shadows and Silver Summers, of course, since they're so gooooood....

Cruel Summer - 2016-04-20 - The Knockout SF (w/Shark Toys and Bent Shapes)

Cruel Summer
The Knockout
San Francisco, CA

With Landlines (not taped), Shark Toys, and Bent Shapes

Taped by thehappyone, a blend of Edirol R09-HR and Olympus LS-5 recording devices.

'home taping is killing music', soundchecking

Sound clears up a bit from track 3 onwards as I positioned the Olympus more advantageously.

New tracks "Trust" and "Skyless" are now my favorite tracks from them.  Now that Young Prisms are no more, these guys are setting the bar for what you'd call "shoegaze" in the City.

Support them by seeing them live and buying merch:  https://cruelsummmer.bandcamp.com/

A 7" is coming out in a few weeks with "Around You / Around Me", backed by "Crazy", from their Part Time Punks session, I believe.

Listen to their performance here:

Intense set (multiple 50 gallon oil drums were brought out this time) which oddly didn't include anything from their latest album "Aegean".  At one point drummer Alan gets "fired" so Kerry can play drums on "Ivory Coast"...he's told there's no back door, you have to leave in shame in front of all of these people...but don't fret, he's back pounding the skins by "Spice Fields"...no shirt, all service.

Superb recording which I'm thrilled to share with you.

Somebody kept turning off The Night Light, literally...caused by an electrical issue which kept throwing the breaker...which the band dealt with aplomb...even starting up a couple of songs which had been bisected at the solos...

Note:  Not totally complete, I missed the very first 30 seconds and the first interruption before the start of the first song.

Ringmix - Bang! by The Weathermen, with samples off my answering machine

My latest installment of weirdness, blogging it up for more general consumption, since it's really too good not to share.

Listen to it here.

The backing track is a song called Bang Bang by The Weathermen! Loved that tune...

These were real people that left real messages on our answering machine, around '87-88. Digitized these about 15 years ago...way before computers made sound editing easy, was pretty much doing the "sound on sound" thing with one of those dual cassette decks...if you heard these now you'd figure these were Jerky Boys-style put-ons, but nope, these are 100% the real deal.

The first...I'm sorry to say used to be a close "friend"...she was a WHOLE bunch of evil, and yeah she called me "brother"....get this, she wanted to borrow a pack of Krazy Glue to put in some hated classmate's panties (Think it was a cheerleader rivalry revenge thing), and went apesh*t when I told her that wasn't such a hot idea. And...I eventually did pick up the phone, and (sorry to say) probably gave her the stupid pack of Krazy Glue.  I hope to God she never actually went through with her insane plan.

You see, I was totally smitten with her, even though most of my friends pretty much hated her guts since she was a totally stuck-up POS...and managed to get a couple of nice guys to be her boyfriend...the original draft called them "saps", but that's unfair to them, one in particular I had no problem with, he was a really, really nice (now we'd say 'chill') guy...though one other jock-type we all knew (*NOT* one of her steady boyfriends) bragged about what he was able to get her to do for him, which I could hardly believe at the time, we all figured he was lying or blowing smoke...but in retrospect, now believe was 100% true.

In exchange I got the "privilege" to hang around with her at lunch and do her homework, since I got pretty good grades in high school. She also was a student TA in my senior Econ class which for some unknown reason I was totally bombing, she managed to get on the teacher's computer to change my D to a B...I don't think I asked her to, she just did it...I still feel sick to my stomach about that.

The second miscreant...was some racist tenant who had it in for my dad, and apparently hammed up this totally racist, ugly, hick impersonation, or he really WAS like that, yikes!

...warning: foul/racist/sexist language...and actually quite scary/upsetting at the time...

Shark Toys - 2016-01-10 - Bottom Of The Hill SF

Shark Toys
10 Jan 2016
Bottom Of The Hill
San Francisco CA

taper: thehappyone
kit: Sonic Studios DSM-6s/L > Olympus LS-5

Not going to get into why, but the blog is BACK.  Decided it will be mixing old and new stuff, as I get time.

Opening act for the Terry Malts / Male Gaze show at Bottom Of The Hill...both of these bands are now mixed SF/LA outfits, so fitting that an LA band would open for them.

I don't have a setlist for this one, and I came in late and likely missed a couple of songs, with the first one I captured here.   Any song IDs appreciated!

Don't know too much of these guys, they've been together since at least 2009, and their discography seems to consist of a 7" EP, an LP, and a rare-as-@@@ tape.  The set seems to have been all new tracks, which should hopefully show up at some point.  The PTP folks describes these guys as "equal parts Desperate Bicycles, Subway Sect, Tronics, and the early Flying Nun catalogue."  Add a bit of Fall influence and it makes for a worthwhile opening act.

Stream from YouTube

This uses TunesToTube to convert individual tracks and pictures into uploaded content.  Wasn't really happy with other options, as let's face it, many of us don't download anything anymore, so this is my solution for that.

Download (320k MP3 in zipfile).  Available for those who have iTunes or want to "have" these.

Lossless available UPON REQUEST, available via Bittorrent.

Not many, wasn't in a photo-taking mood at that point in the proceedings.

Seems that this band has been somewhat underserved online, at least until some friends pitched in. Here's a link to another song played at Pehrspace about two years ago (31 Jan 2014) filmed by the Razorcake people...

Another one from Permanent Records from 7 Oct 2013, also filmed by Razorcake.

A third one from Razorcake, this one from 5 Oct 2013 @Permanent Records, Eagle Rock.
