Retribution Gospel Choir / Carta / Sarah June - 2010-04-09 - Hotel Utah SF

Sourced from Yelp

(penned and assembled in mid-July 2026)

This is an exercise in reconstruction, back in an era that wasn't seemingly extensively awash in photography or video footage...which is as just as ephemeral today, at least without the willful action of choosing to document, something I realize isn't for everybody...but as revealed in myself and tomzero's subsequent email, was something quite a few people partook in, as there are quite a few RGC recordings on archive.org.  Going back through my emails, it seems tickets for this were $10/ea. which was a huge bargain...couldn't imagine this being less than $30/ea now.

In fact, this is the only photo which I have from this show...if I recall, the Hotel Utah's venue space was pretty dark back then.  I only took this photo because we used to have the very same Belfast Sparkling Water clock in the grocery store my dad used to own...I sold it on eBay (in non-working condition!) for a few hundred dollars maybe five years prior to this date.

the only photo I could find from that night (thehappyone)

taper: thehappyone
kit: Edirol R-09HR (built-in mics)  ...and sounds like it too, although I've had tracks I recorded at a live A Certain Ratio show this way used officially!  I need to find the link for it.

The opener was Sarah June (neĆ© Weathers).  This is *not* the Sarah June currently on YouTube.  These would have been tracks from her 'In Black Robes' album from that year.

When the band was soundchecking before the start of the first track, you can hear my wife recount her Kraftwerk story to tomzero, where she saw them with me at the Warfield back in 2004, a month before my youngest was born...and was flummoxed to see people cheer wildly for them when they barely moved...especially the rousing applause Florian Schneider (RIP) received at the end of the show when...he tapped his foot.  It's a story she tells to this day.

Setlist

In Your Chevorlet
Judgement Day
From My Window High
Brand Of Bitterness
Dial Tone
Till You Hit The Pavement
Cowboy
When Doves Cry [Prince]
My Red Shoes

On her Bandcamp (where you can purchase as well, which I just did) is this comment from 'Seasaidh':  "This album is a god damned treasure. I will never stop showing it to people. Equal parts John Fahey, Marissa Nadler and Elliott Smith."  High praise, indeed.

Tomzero used Sonic Studios DSM-6 mics into his own Edirol R-09HR.

Setlist

Back To Nature
Who Killed The Clerk?
Building Bridges
Descension
The Last Name Of Your First Love
The Late Alfred M

This was the sixth of nine times I'd see Kyle / Ray / Sasha play, the last time was over 10 years ago.  Best described as melancholic post-rock, they were mostly instrumental but really had some gorgeous tunes.

For this posting, I've just created a blend of both of our versions, so as to have a modern mastered version for your enjoyment...letting the tomzero version take the lead, since he had the better equipment, with my recording about -12 to -15dB in the mix, just to add some presence, since the Sonic Studios mics can be a bit trebley.

There's a slight edit into "Who Killed The Clerk" to edit out the bit (literally just one measure) where tomzero adjusts his volume which causes hiccups in the recording, it's a known issue with the Edirols.

Would see Low a few years hence (in 2014), opening for Slowdive at the Warfield, but here we get Alan Sparhawk and cohorts playing their slowcore take on gospel-blues...or so I imagined in my head, until I played this again.  It's much more melodic and more importantly....faster paced.  Not slowcore at all, and much better than I remember!   I have to admit when they returned to play in 2011, I had stated "once was enough", so I guess my enthusiasm back then for them wasn't top-level.

I hadn't followed what happened to Mr. Sparhawk's projects after Low stopped upon Mimi's passing, but it looks like he's kept himself busy, heartening to see.

Setlist

Breaker
For Her Blood
Working Hard
White Wolf
Poor Man's Daughter
They Knew You Well
Take Your Time
Hide It Away
Your Bird
Something's Going To Break
Electric Guitar
68 Comeback

I never tracksplit my version, as it was badly brickwalled, so it is being presented here for the first time, but am also blending it with tomzero's as I did with Carta's, with about the same characteristics as the Carta blend.  You can grab all three versions if you like.
