Not going to get into why, but the blog is BACK.  Decided it will be mixing old and new stuff, as I get time.

Opening act for the Terry Malts / Male Gaze show at Bottom Of The Hill...both of these bands are now mixed SF/LA outfits, so fitting that an LA band would open for them.

I don't have a setlist for this one, and I came in late and likely missed a couple of songs, with the first one I captured here.   Any song IDs appreciated!

Don't know too much of these guys, they've been together since at least 2009, and their discography seems to consist of a 7" EP, an LP, and a rare-as-@@@ tape.  The set seems to have been all new tracks, which should hopefully show up at some point.  The PTP folks describes these guys as "equal parts Desperate Bicycles, Subway Sect, Tronics, and the early Flying Nun catalogue."  Add a bit of Fall influence and it makes for a worthwhile opening act.

Catchy "lo-fi" garage-y rock.  Like like like like like like like. While some wonder why the Intelligence's pop ditties aren't more popular, some have a greedy desire to see them remain underground, so they remain all yours.  The paradox of Indie, I guess.  I'm not going to go there.  This is not Pitchfork.  I had a blast, and while not as insane as they were during Thee Oh Sees set, the crowd certainly were buying what Finberg and Co. were selling.

I had seen The Intelligence once before, at Part Time Punks in 2009.  They made a positive impression then, and it continued forward to seeing them a year later.  I quite liked "Block Of Ice" not realizing it was a cover of the group they played after.  Or is it the Thee Oh Sees who cover it?  No, I was right the first time.                                                

My recording was done with the trusty Sony PCM-M10, which I had set on top of a video poker machine stage left-ish.

This was pretty special, it shouldn't surprise anyone in the least that both Ana and Gina from the Raincoats were in the audience.  In fact before this, I let Gina past me so she could film the set.  You can hear Gina right at the start tell Viv how beautiful she looks...she does indeed look amazing considering she's 54 now(!).  There's a couple of dim photos of them included.

Hearing her talk about Sid Vicious offering to give her an orgasm (which she claims she took a raincheck on) and how Vivienne Westwood used to be a schoolteacher was way more entertaining than reading about in some Jon Savage tome[1]...and "Confessions of a MILF"...funniest song title ever.

About as good as you can hope for in a recording too, except for the clown who you can hear between songs laughing and yelling right into the mic.  Wait, that's me!  Sorry.

Their first LA performance ever!

This recording is probably on par with the other recordings I did on the downstairs stage, but instead of being taped 'down in front', I was in front of the stage left speaker stack, with relatively few obstructions, so technically it's  probably the best recording I've ever done.

The Raincoats were somewhat more shambolic here than in SF, but c'mon, this is not Yes we're talking about.  Took them a couple of times to get Adventures Close To Home going, Gina kept flubbing the bass intro.  "Sack the bassist" she cries after the second attempt went south.  'Only Loved At Night' is just one of those songs...

Right before Viv Albertine came on for her set, I had a chance to briefly chat with Gina Birch...who had videoed her entire performance.

Blackpool's very own, in their first LA appearance in nigh-on 25 years.

This recording is dominated by the riffing of new guitarist Steve Stringer...whom even if you don't rate his playing, is a great name for a guitarist, about as good as Lindsay Thrasher from the much-missed Vomit Launch.  He was a bit unsteady at the start of 'Charnel Ground' which seems to be a new oldie that the group brought out to play, but as you can hear, sounds good otherwise.  You can hear Larry on harmonica(!) during encore Dirty Disco.  An extended version of Gene as it took the elder Cassidy a few minutes to come out.

Includes some good pictures from my friend Mark.  The man at the DJ booth is none other than James Nice of LTM fame, whom we had the chance to meet.  My favorite picture is this one, which captures both Cassidy brothers in their element.

I taped this group at the very same location last year. If anything, I found them even more enjoyable the second time around! One of the finest UK indie-funk groups to ever grace our shores. They covered Pylon's "M Train", in memory of Randy Bewley their guitarist who passed away last year. I was lucky to have saw them (briefly) at PTP last year and at their penultimate gig at the Independent in SF a couple of days after.

And I was lucky to see the Medium Medium guys play here...unlike the previous year Andy Ryder was all in black instead of his typical all-white garb. Amazingly, since their reformation, they have *only* played Stateside...and not often, only a half-dozen or so times at most.

If I must say so, this is a superb recording, one of the best I've ever done. Spent quite a bit on time in "post", it's worth it.

Part Time Punks Mini-Fest SF - 2009

Going in performance (forward) order....this is an archival record of everything that I've turned up for this show.

To date, no footage or recordings appear to exist for GRASS WIDOW / NODZZZ / WEAVE...  There's one track for VIV ALBERTINE, which I'd make up for in LA.

While FOR AGAINST was listed on the flyer, they had to pull out at the last minute due to logistical issues.

While I was up in the mezzanine hearing Viv practicing on her guitar, there's no documentation of her set either.  "Gang Of Four" was indeed just Hugo Burnham DJ'ing as the flyer says, and while we videoed nearly all of Section 25, it's only via the horrible overloaded digicam audio (a Kodak unit)

And even The Raincoats recording got cut off, due to...read on... *sigh*.

One of the last times the band played live before the unfortunate passing of guitarist Randy Bewley a scant few months afterwards.

I had been upstairs catching Savage Republic, as I figured since I had tickets a couple of nights later at The Independent, I could catch Pylon then...however, after SR wrapped up, I was able to see them perform their encore, M Train.  After witnessing the excitement surrounding them,  I wish I had stayed downstairs for the entire set....but did see it in full a couple days later back in San Francisco (as well as a produce a recording) which will appear in due time.

There's some footage online, including an amusing one where someone jumps onstage to join Vanessa...but the audio quality is subpar, so I'll leave it to your web searching skills to find more of these.

Medium Medium (who had played with them at the first Part Time Punks fest) for the following year opened their set with a heartfelt tribute to Pylon, which you can watch here...the video's pretty compressed, but is a very good listen and a brilliant cover.

Notes

A band that I had not heard of previously, who ended up greatly impressing me, especially the guitarist, who had a style just right of Andy Gill's.  Turns out they were another early-80s outfit that had only modest initial success before calling it a day but for whatever reason or another deciding to make another go of it.  In any event, a good pairing for Pylon and (later on) ACR.
 

Like all my PTP recordings, bass-overloaded, but nothing that a good re-EQ couldn't fix.

A bit of annoying chatter during the middle of 'Further Than Funk Dream' but otherwise a satisfying listen.

Outstanding set from arguably Factory Records' most influential band, barring a certain Godlike Genius that knows how to strum a chord or three, or a half-Salford/half-Macclesfield beat band of some renown...whom they pay homage to by covering one of their songs.  

 

A real coup for Part Time Punks to bring them to the last gig they played in the States.  Was of course front and center for this one, and this recording has made the rounds before but is to this day one of my favorites and I still listen to it from time to time.

I traveled all the way down from SF to catch A Certain Ratio, which to date has not come back to the West Coast, so glad that I did.  What's remarkable isn't who I saw but who I didn't see.  Namely:  The Nightingales, Nervous Gender, Vivian Girls, Mika Miko, Warpaint, The Urinals, Magic Bullets (who I did catch a few times the following year) and Ben White (otherwise known as Benny Shambles) Softboiled Eggies, nor do I remember any of the DJs...and only saw the encore track (M-Train) from Pylon.  Luckily I caught them in SF a few days later, their penultimate performance before guitarist Randy Bewley sadly and suddenly passed away.  

 

The good news though is that I missed Ariel Pink, that I do not regret!

First up, Grimble Grumble.  I came in midway through their set and only captured several songs (forst two unidentified), the last being a cover of "Here Come The Warm Jets" by Brian Eno, and then outro music of the Chills' amazing 'Pink Frost'.

And then, Wild Stares.  When researching this, I learned that they just released an album last October ("Automatic Writing Machine"), based on an album they started working on this very show.  It's actually excellent.
